About

Who is Anna Youman?

My artwork is centered around joy and expression. I have always been fascinated by the space inbetween and how it connects us all. The gaps or emptiness that exists between objects, situations and relationships. An essence of energy or intention that can be felt or experienced in that particular space. I believe that through working abstractly I am able to express that feeling of connection and space more clearly than through more literal representational work. I find that life is much more interesting when we allow for things to be expressed in the abstract. I like the discomfort and openness of not knowing.

I believe in having art in our most important interior spaces that excites us somewhere in our bodies and minds is such a gift.  Artwork made by me is made in the space between those hard edges of reality. These paintings are a tangible thing that can remind us to experience life as it is right now.

I attended the University of Massachusetts Amherst and received a BFA in art education and a Masters degree from Massachusetts College of Art and Design. I have continued my education as an artist through classes ranging from illustration, printmaking and painting. I have participated in many group shows over the years both at the Mass Art Museum, Boston Public Schools After Hours staff show, and the Images and Words show at the Menino Arts Center in Boston. I belong to a wonderful collective space at 450 Harrison Ave building in the SOWA Arts district of Boston. I am currently a member of the Catalyst community hosted by the artist Michelle Armas- an ongoing professional community of artists. I have also spent the last 20 years as an art teacher in the Boston Public Schools teaching some of the most talented little artists
